I need an Attorney, but what type?

It can be a complicated world out there. So many rules and regulations to keep track of; so many frequent changes to those rules and regulations, usually varying by state and municipality; and so many federal statutes that supersede those variously changing local ordinances. It’s a miracle that anybody can keep track of it all!

No wonder people turn to attorneys to help sort through the often impenetrable thicket of laws.

There’s no doubt about it: When it comes to protecting your interests, hiring an attorney is the wisest course of action.

But let’s take a step back for a moment: You may know you need an attorney but still find yourself asking: "What type of attorney do I need?”

In order to answer that question adequately, we’ll need to take a bit of a deep dive into the world of types of attorneys. Before we begin, though, take a look at our short blog post, “10 Questions To Ask Before Hiring An Attorney.”

As always, Horenstein Law Group is ready to assist you. With law offices in Portland and Vancouver, we’re just a short trip or a quick phone call away. Contact Horenstein Law Group to find out how our attorneys can help you.

What type of attorney do I need?

The process of finding the right type of attorney for your needs can be simplified if you can boil your problem down to a single sentence.

For example:

  • “I want to form a limited liability company” (business attorney)
  • “I need help with wetlands and environmental permitting” (land-use attorney)
  • “My back hurts after I was rear-ended on the highway” (personal injury attorney).
  • Is your situation related to estate planning, bankruptcy or immigration? Perhaps a general practice attorney would be a good place to start, since they can help you narrow down your options.

There are many types of attorneys, so be sure to identify the problem, and then begin bearing down on finding the precise attorney for your specific needs.

Remember: You can never ask too many questions.

  • Can a particular attorney make recommendations and referrals accordingly?
  • Can a law office handle any and all real estate issues?
  • Is this attorney experienced in business trademark law?
  • Does that attorney have a wide range or expertise in tax-related issues, both state and federal?

Don’t get discouraged. Finding the right attorney takes time.
